"Water permeates society, and its availability impacts all facets of human endeavor, be it economic, ecological, or social". Indeed, freshwater is being dubbed as the "oil of the late 20th century" - an essential, but increasingly scarce resource for post-industrial society."(Managing Global Water Resources Sustainably: A World Bank Perspective* by Ismail Serageldin, Vice President, Environmentally Sustainable Development, The World Bank )"

It was with the aim of working together towards a world in which all people, without exception, enjoy access to safe and adequate water and sanitation facilities that UNICEF promoted handpump manufacturing units in developing countries, including India.
In rural India, where women spend half their lifetime fetching water from dirty ponds, miles away; where, according to a WHO survey, 80% of all diseases are spread by open, contaminated water, ground water is the only source of safe, potable water. And the only method of tapping it, inexpensively, is by a hand pump.
India Mark II and India Mark III are UNICEF standardized handpumps aimed at making water safe to consume, more widely and conveniently available and promoting consumption of mineral enriched ground water.
